Summer Slam 2022 Feature: Tracey O’Callaghan

In addition to all the talented competitors for Summer Slam 2022, we’re lucky to welcome Tracey O’Callaghan to the stage as our feature performer!

Tracey O’Callaghan is a passionate, raw, feisty poet. She will take you on a journey, fire you up, and fill you to the brim with powerful words. Tracey made her spoken word debut in the South Australian state heats of the 2018 Australian Poetry Slam. Since then, it has been a crazy ride. She was a state finalist in the competition for 2018, 2019, and 2020. In 2021, she took out the top spot to be crowned South Australian state champion. As well as being seen on stages around SA, Tracey has performed internationally in Longford and Dublin, Ireland. Her written work has been featured in several anthology collections, and a book of her own is on its way.If you were on the fence about attending… get off the fence and book your ticket! More information is in the Facebook event page linked below. Make sure to click ‘going’ for more updates!

Summer Slam 2022

Sunday 6th February 2022
from 7:00pm

Jive
181 Hindley Street, Adelaide

$10.

As a practice run for the SA leg of the Australian Poetry Slam, the Summer Slam has traditionally consisted of five heats, plus a final. This year, we’re doing it a little differently. This will be a one night only event!

The poets will compete in a random order, and the top five scores will go through to an immediate second round – just like at the National Final.

We have no choice but to limit the number of events this year, so this is your chance to flex those poetry muscles. The stakes are lower, the competition is friendly, and the environment is as supportive as you can get.

REPEAT: Poets have ONE chance at the Summer Slam title this year! This is going to be a ripper to watch. We know how keen you all are to support the arts during this trying time – not to mention supporting Jive, a venue who have always been good to us. So get ready, brush up the poems, put aside some money for a ticket and a few drinks, and hit that booking link!

This is a COVID-safe event. You will need to check in with a QR code and provide proof of double vaccination or a legitimate exemption.

Click here to book at trybooking.

No Summer Slam this year… :(

Dear poetry slam family,
unfortunately there will be no Summer Slam this year.

2020 was tough and the start of 2021 is no different. Everyone managed to contribute a great deal to getting the SA leg of the 2020 Australian Poetry Slam done and dusted. We are very proud of our volunteers and very grateful not only to everyone who competed but everyone who attended as audience members. We made it happen because we simply had to. But we are under-resourced, unfunded and, quite frankly, exhausted.

So please all explore your local poetry community and see what other events you can be involved in while we take a short breather from slamming. One good place to keep up to date on what’s happening around town is the Adelaide Poetry Gig Guide on Facebook

We look forward to seeing you all at the 2021 SA Poetry Slam later in the year.

In the meantime, you can relive some of the best of recent SA Slam events on the SWSA Youtube channel:

Congratulations to Kathy Parker for taking out the 2020 Summer Slam, with Matthew Neild and Rubina in second and third places!

Well done to all the poets who dared to step up over the summer and share their words.

Thank you to the venues for their support – State Library of South Australia, Broadcast Bar, Southwark Hotel, Libertine by Louis, and Jive

A big thank you to Wakefield Press for their continued support and prizes, to ACW wrestling for the great images, to the punters who came along to hear the poets and eat the chocolates.

Thank you to Eve Harris for the music.

And thanks to all our volunteers: Mel, Matt, Ian, Kerryn and Michael.
