Summer Slam is always a hit and this year we are condensing all that fun into a one night extravaganza!
Summer Slam is a low stakes – high fun poetry slam competition and everyone’s welcome! We encourage beginner slammers and our seasoned regulars to take to the mic and blow us away in under 2 minutes! But it’s not just for the poets… this is set to be a great night of entertainment so come along to watch the slammers battle it out with their words. You might even get to be a judge on the night!
Up to 20 poets will compete under standard slam rules: 2 minute time limit, original work, no props or costumes. Then, the top 6 will progress to the final round to perform a fresh poem and compete for the prize and the glory of being the 2025 Summer Slam Champ. Yes, that means you need to have at least two poems ready to perform (see the full rules below).
FEATURE ARTIST: MEI SZETU
Mei Szetu is a queer, neurodivergent and mixed race Malaysian Chinese Australian poet born, raised and practicing on Kaurna Country. They’ve been performing at spoken word poetry at open mics since 2022. In 2024 they made their slam debut at the Spoken word SA Summer Slam where they came second place. Later the same year they came first in the State Slam, earning the privilege of competing at the national Australian Poetry Slam at the Sydney Opera house. For Mei poetry is many things; a place of sanctuary, a conduit for connection, a weapon in the fight against complacency and oppression, and a way to temper their tendency towards word vomit. Through layering prose Mei’s poetry explores their relationship with identity, colonialism, class, and the many fallibilities of human condition.
