Spoken Word SA are proud to highlight and support some of the best poetry in the country… but now, for one night only, we want to see your WORST!

Towel Day is celebrated every year on the 25th of May to honour Douglas Adams and his sci-fi classic Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. For Towel Day 2023, we will be hosting a Vogon Poetry Night!

“Vogons are one of the most unpleasant races in the galaxy – not evil, but bad-tempered, bureaucratic, officious, and callous. They wouldn’t even lift a finger to save their own grandmothers from the ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal without orders, signed in triplicate, sent in, sent back, lost, found, queried, subjected to public inquiry, lost again, and finally buried in soft peat for three months and recycled as firelighters. On no account should you allow a Vogon to read poetry to you.” – Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (Douglas Adams)

Poets will have one minute to perform the most awful poetry they can create. Give us your worst metaphors, your tackiest rhymes, your most unsettling imagery, your most off-putting descriptions… whatever it takes to make us cringe and squirm!

We want to have some fun with this one. Jeer, laugh, heckle, and leave your competitive instincts aside for the night. Prizes will be arbitrary and low-stakes, and standard slam rules do NOT apply.

**Note: Any content that includes bigotry is not welcome. We want bad poetry, but NOT bad messages. Yes, even if you mean it as a joke.**
