Get ready, South Australia! Spoken Word SA is calling on all our poets for a special one night only competition. This is… Animal Slam!

We’re using the format you all loved from this year’s Summer Slam: all entrants compete in the first round, and the top five scoring poets go through to an immediate second round to battle it out for first place.

For this competition, all first round poems must be somehow tied to the theme of ANIMALS. Whether you write about an animal, use animal instincts as a metaphor for your love life, dedicate a verse to Animal from the Muppets, even if you drop a single one-line reference to a dog, we’ll count it! It’s important to note that only first round poems need be on theme. If you get through to the second round, you can do any poem you want (as long as it fits the rest of the rules!).

Standard slam rules apply: two minutes maximum, no props, no costumes, no musical accompaniment, and all poems must be the original work of the performer. Five judges will be selected at random from the audience to determine the scores. As always, the judges decision is final!

To help get you in the right state of mind… here are the prizes for our winners on the night:
FIRST PLACE will get a day pass for two adults at the lovely Adelaide Zoo.
SECOND PLACE will get a copy of Dropbear, the 2022 Stella Prize Winning poetry collection by Evelyn Araluen, donated by Dymocks Adelaide.
THIRD PLACE will get Animal from the Muppets, brought to you in plushie form.

For this special event, we are stoked to have a feature performance from Taeghan Buggy!

Taeghan Buggy is a writer, poet, and performer who likes to craft poems with bite, garnishing her work with a twist of emotion and a few dangerous words. Queensland raised, and Adelaide located, Taeghan has written and performed for a number of arts magazines, notably The Hearth Creative readings and the New Wave Audio Theatre Project, and at numerous Adelaide-based spoken-word events. She was a finalist for the 2021 South Australian State Poetry Slam Competition and reads at open mic and slam nights where she can, when she can.

This is going to be such a great night in all regards. Keep getting excited, keep working on those poems, put the Animal Slam in your calendar if you haven’t already, and practise those howls! *
