The brand new Nature Festival is hitting Adelaide with a huge lineup of events. What better time to get involved in a slam that isn’t part of a larger competition but rather just about having some fun on the day with a given ‘theme’.

A great first heat to kick off slam season 2020 with plenty of new faces and voices sharing the stage with some of our more seasoned regulars. Congratulations to all stepped up but there can only be one winner… and one runner up! So well done to Heat 1 Winner Chris Jaksa and Heat 1 Runner Up Tracey O’Callaghan who have earned their place at the SA Poetry Slam State Final on 17th October.

Contestants have 2 minutes to speak, scream, howl, whisper or sing their original poem. There are no props, no costumes, no music: just the poet and the words. Judges are selected at random from the audience. The heat winners compete again in the SA State Final and the two top finalists then go on to compete in the Australian Poetry Slam National Showcase.

The 2020 Australian Poetry Slam is back!

This year has thrown up some pretty serious challenges for the poetry / spoken word / slam community but we are pleased to announce that the Australian Poetry Slam is back for 2020.

At this stage, the SA heats and final of the slam are planned to go ahead as real-time, real-world live events in venues across town, assuming social-distancing / venue opening conditions do not become any more restrictive. However, all events will be adhering to a COVID-19 safety plan. And, of course, plans could change at any time if the situation deteriorates here in Adelaide.

Adelaide City Library Poet-in-Residence: Deb Stewart – coronavirus update…

Due to the coronavirus situation, the final event of this residency scheduled for 20th March has had to be cancelled.

In partnership with the Adelaide City Library, SWSA is pleased to announce that our first Poet-in-Residence for 2020 is Deb Stewart with her project Mapping the Human City.

Join Deb to explore your connections to the City of Adelaide through poetry. Capture your memories and reflections, with an emphasis on human interaction with city buildings, spaces and landmarks. Together we will create collaborative and individual poems that map the ‘human city’ and discover what Adelaide means to us.
