The search is on to find Australia’s best spoken word poet! Speak, sing, howl, whisper or sing your original poem at the South Australian heats of the Australian Poetry Slam, an electric live event where the audience is the judge.
And for something a little different this time around our Heat 3 guest performer is Marc Ryan aka The Beautiful Bogan – Adelaide’s own home grown northern ‘burbs bogan. Since setting foot on stage in 2011, Marc’s comedy career has taken off. During 2014 Marc won both the Adelaide Comedy Lehmo’s Award and the South Australian Raw Comedy competition. This in turn landed Marc in the National Raw Comedy Finals at Melbourne’s International Comedy Festival. As a result of his performance, Marc was given the accolade of having delivered “the night’s best joke” by the Herald Sun. In 2015 Marc won Dave Grant Comedy Award and went on to write and perform two successful Fringe Shows each earning him 4.5 star reviews.
The rules for the slam are simple. Contestants are given two minutes to speak, scream, howl, whisper or sing their original poem on stage at one of five heats scheduled to take place at different locations around metropolitan Adelaide during the August – September period. There are no props, no costumes, and no music allowed; just the poet and their words. Judges are selected at random from the audience. Click here to see the rules in full.
First and second place in each heat compete again at the SA Final, to be held this year at the Goodwood Institute (166a Goodwood Road, Goodwood). Always a popular event on the Spoken Word SA calendar, it has sold out in advance three years running. The SA Final winner and runner up are then flown to Sydney to slug it out for over $10 000 in prizes and the coveted title of Australian Slam Poet 2018 at the Australian Poetry Slam National Showcase and Final hosted at the Sydney Opera House.
