Ashlee Karlar joins the SWSA Team!

It is time for Spoken Word SA to officially welcome to the fold its talented new co-director! Ashlee Karlar is a queer, feminist poet from Adelaide. A lover of odes and metaphors, Ashlee is a social worker who believes that art and writing is an underused tool in trauma informed practice. She is a past SA finalist for the Australian Poetry Slam, a former poet in residence, and a regular at open mics around the city.

Start getting ready for the 2019 Australian Poetry Slam! Here are the SA dates and venues. More details for each event will be announced closer to the dates. Make sure you check out the rules! Some have changed from previous years. Most importantly, if you get to the finals, you must do a new poem different from the one you did in your heat (or the previous final, if you get that far).

Empathy and the Body: Poetry Workshops with Chiara Gabrielli

Using the canvas of the human anatomy, explore how to personify and more genuinely connect with the most immediate part of our lives, our bodies. Pulling our focus and vision inwards, towards ourselves, and away from the cacophony of external, larger lens of global news and information. Using the personal stories and relationships we have with our own bodies, and pre-existing text from medical books, advertisements, and other media to creatively spark another way of thinking.

Chiara Gabrielli: 2019 Adelaide City Library Poet-in-Residence

Spoken Word SA and the Adelaide City Library are proud to announce the successful applicant for the Poet in Residence Program for May 2019: Chiara Gabrielli.

We saw a great set of applications with a record number being submitted for just one place. But the program looks like being back in 2019 – 20 and there will be plenty more opportunities.
